Sad Apple treee

My apple tree is looking sick.  Although it has a forming crop, the apples are marked.  Also some leaves are brown, some new shoots curled.  I have noticed a lot of ants on the tree.  Any suggestions as to how I could try to help it.  Thanks.

    Is it a new tree or a long established tree?

    It’s an old tree and previously fruited well

    Sounds like it has suffered a bad attack of aphids. Look inside the curled leaves and you should find the culprits, the ants are farming them.
