Erysimum advice please

I'm growing wallflowers from seed for the first time this year, and it's unlikely I'll have next year's planting scheme organised enough in my head by Autumn to know where I'll want them. If I'm going to keep them in containers until Spring, what's the smallest size of pot that would work? Thanks.

To be honest, if you can work out where you want to put them l would do that and get them well established in the ground over the winter.
If you really want to pot them up it depends on the type, are they the dwarf ones or "normal" height ?
  • Hmm, that's not what I wanted to hear.  :D One variety is 30cm and the other 40cm. How are they with being transplanted? I do have some space I could use to plant them in a temporary home if they won't mind being moved later.

That would probably be better, usually they're grown on in what's known as a nursery bed before being planted out. If you have some space "in the ground" then personally l would do that  :)
  • Sounds like a plan. Thanks. :)

Good plan,  they will transplant ok,  I don’t know if it’s still the same now but we used to buy bunches of these very cheap from the green grocer,  not in pots,  just dug up plants.  They always grew well..

  • Oh I've never seen any at the greengrocers - I must keep an eye out this year, just out of interest. Sounds like they're happy to be transplanted then. Cool, I can get them in the ground when the annuals come out, thanks.

  • Well, I have a new question about my wallflowers! I'm growing two kinds, one a 'sugar rush' variety which I understood could possibly bloom this autumn as well as next spring, and a bog standard cheap as chips packet of just 'wallflower' seeds from Wilko. In the last couple of days there are flower buds forming on some of the Wilko ones. I'm guessing if I let them flower now, that'll be their lot and I won't get flowers in spring too? To be honest I have a fair few plants and I'd be happy to let some flower now and brighten up my flagging garden. But ideally I'd like some for spring too. The plants are still quite small so I haven't pinched them yet. If the others should start trying to flower too and I pinch them, will that keep them quiet till spring or are they likely to try to flower again in a few weeks?

As an aside, I've also had 3 varieties of the violas I'm growing for winter flower after just 6 weeks. Not a problem as I'll use them now and sow more for winter in case these run out of steam, but it just feels like everything is rushing to flower for me at the mo.  :D
