Pear Tree Trunk problem

Hi.  Does anyone have any idea of what’s going on with my pear tree? I can’t figure out whether it’s disease or an animal has been scratching at the bark.

Hello @adele-mccarthy2612  and welcome to the forum 😊

I’m sorry to say that the bark falling off because the trunk rotting and the tree is dying.

I can’t tell why from that photo.

It looks like something that’s been developing over quite a period of time … that’s not recent damage.

    I’m sorry. 😞

  • Hi there @Dovefromabove. Thank you for your warm welcome and reply to my query.  It’s so sad because it’s full of baby pears.  I’m not sure whether to leave it to die, or get it cut down now. ☹️

I would leave if if you can … you may get some fruit from it this year … maybe even next … some trees take a while to die totally … and anyway, rotting trees are a wonderful wildlife resource for birds and insects … woodpeckers find grubs in the rotting wood … maybe even best there, and bluetits and longtailed tits will flock there to feast on aphids and caterpillars … rotting wood is very important. 😊

  • @Dovefromabove.  Will definitely leave it for the wildlife you mention. We always save the pears for our visiting badgers, who love them!  Will just let nature take its course.  Thanks very much indeed for your advice. 😃
