Evergreen help please

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
At my old house, there was an evergreen shrub with a slightly  flaky  red trunk. The leaves were soft and sometimes went red in the winter
You could hack it back and it would  grow back producing shoots along the stem
I have this plant which might be it but I'm  not sure
If it's  goung in the ground , it will need hard pruning.can anyone identify it,

Ps  I know it looks a bit  like a hebe  but it isn't . I did have a label once 🙁

    @B3 It looks like it suits a dry soil? I think I would also take some cuttings. Can your remember it having any flowers?

    No it never had flowers.
    I think I might have well rooted  cuttings already but then they might be small leaved hebes. I wish I labelled things. Part of me thinks I'll remember and the other part assumes they'll die and it'll be a waste of time

    Is there any scent from the leaves when you crush them @B3?

    @Plantminded
    I found this old label and I wonder if that might be it.
    However it seems  not to get very big. The one I was trying for got very big if you let it.
    Is this the kind of plant you can hack back?

    I think you've solved it @B3!  I don't know the plant myself so looked it up, it has a tendency for sudden death which is a bit worrying!

    Hmm. Well I'll take a few cuttings and label them!
    Then I'll hack the parent. It's a complete mess as it is. Those thin dead stems don't look right for the one I was hoping for😐

    Give it a few weeks' grace after pruning but then if still in doubt, take it out - that's what I do @B3!

    It has been badly neglected. Maybe it'll respond to a little attention.
