Lawn issue

Hi I've just had a patio and new path laid. The is now a a 2/3 inch gap where the lawn has bee cut back. Should I put a strip of turf into the gap or seed it. Will a narrow strip of turf take hold? Thanks.

A narrow strip of turf will establish if you keep it well watered and lay it firmly on the soil - turn the strip upside down before you lay it and give it a good soaking with water to make sure the roots are well hydrated.  (I've actually cut my lawn back by about four inches next to my patio, walling and path to create a gap and make mowing easier - you can then get a crisp edge to the lawn with edging shears.)

I would keep the gap, partly for the reason that @Plantminded gave - it's easier to keep the edge tidy. You might get a few weeds germinating in the gap, but running a weeding knife or hoe along the gap every time you mow and occasionally in the winter will sort them.
Also, if there's only a thin bit of soil over the edge of the patio/path footings, grass will struggle there. Stick a spade or fork down vertically right on the edge of the path/patio to check - if it won't go down more than a few inches, there's not enough soil to grow good grass right up to the edge.
