Acer help required

Hello,
Our beautiful tallest red acer which is approximately eight years old has started losing its leaves on one side and has some small white patches on the bark. The branches are still alive but more branches are losing their leaves. The acer is approx seven feet tall and has never had any previous issues. The truck of the tree also has some cracked bark with white patches which we have been able to wipe off with water on a cloth.
Please could someone advise on what we can do (hoping that the tree won't die) to help the acer? Is this wilt?
Thank you.

With it being the main trunk, cutting out the infected area will not be an option.
There is no treatment available.
