Clipping climbing structures together

I have a metal arch, well fixed into the ground, for climbing clematis. About 50 cm away, I have a vertical bird feeder, also well fixed. Both are made of sturdy metal.

I decided to bridge the gap between with a thin obelisk, thus allowing more climbing plants options. The obelisk has a gap of about 10 cm to the arch on one side and the bird feeder on the other. The issue is that this obelisk is very lightweight and needs extra fixing to make it sturdy. I have pushed as far down as I can, given some plant roots that I don't want to damage. I thought the best thing now would be to connect the obelisk to both structures to keep it steady. Are there fittings that could connect such vertical pole structures, without having to dismantle I.e. go around the upright poles and tighten wit no means of slipping over an end. I don't want to have to dismantle the arch or bird feeder.

Would sturdy black cable ties do the trick, fasten one to the other and the middle one to the other side? Perhaps several even.

Exactly my first thought @Uff.  I've always found them handy for all sorts of "fiddly" stuff :)

    Me too @philippasmith2
Amazing what they can be used for.

Or tree ties? The type that are meant to go around a stake and around the tree trunk with a spacer in between?

  • I will give the cable ties a go. I can see points where 450mm ties around 2 obelisk poles and the fixed arch/feeder poles should steady everything. I will look at tree ties if that looks too messy. Thanks.
