Problem with Birch tree

Hi guys,

I have a birch tree in a container. I noticed a couple of months ago that the leaves started to get brown spots on them.... And now I just noticed some of the lower leaves have gone brown and crispy and looks like the branch is dying.

It's in a container as I had it from a little sapling and so I've been growing it on to put in the ground at some point.

Can anyone tell me whats going on with it?
Thanks
Craigh

I think if you take it out of the pot you will see a very dry root ball. If you can find something big enough sink the pot covering the top of the compost in water when the air bubbles have gone you will have hopefully saved it. Agree pot too small.

CraighB  'At some point' is probably 'now'?

I will repot it then :) Is a John Innes number 3 on its own best for trees?

@nick615 I can't plant it out just yet because I want to renovate our garden so I don't really know where it is going to go. So it's the best I can do for now :)

JI no 3 will be fine. Follow @GardenerSuze's advice to rehydrate the rootball first - a wheelie bin may help!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.
