Clematis problem

Does anyone know what’s up with our clematis floribunda? Last year it was spectacular and full of blooms, this year it’s very sad looking

I'm no clematis expert but I have a few different ones in my garden. I find them very hit and miss personally. I've had similar things happen to some of mine before and never really figured out what caused it. Happened to one of mine this year that has never had an issue in over a decade. I chopped it off 6" from the ground and it's now growing back fine, but sadly it'll be a year before it flowers again. Be interested to see other people's thoughts.

I suspect it’s either an under watering or over feeding issue … or a combination of both.
