Hedge too wide (laurel)

Hi We have a hedge that is too wide and ideally we would like to remove it and put in a fence but it is rather expensive to remove. Any thoughts or ideas on what we could do to gain back some of our garden?

I think that the seating idea would look good .We had a laurel hedge at home when I was a girl. Mum used to saw the thing about and cut huge lumps off it when it got out of hand , it always grew back .Good luck with your plans .
