Are my trees dead?

I have moved in to a brand new house with trees planted by the the developer, but 5 of the trees have not grown any leaves on them yet and I suspect they are probably dead. I don't know what type of tree they are, but they all have the same bark. Any ideas anyone?

Are the leaves shown anything to do with the trees ? They look like a type of Photinia, probably "Red Robin".
Maybe a longer distance photo might help  :)

Trees that have no leaves on  this far into the season are dead.  New developments often have conditions put on them. Eg, so many trees need to be planted and if they die within 5 years they have to be replaced.  Contact your developer if you want new trees.   For the cost of them, I would pick something I liked to replace it with instead.

I think the green leaves are Portugese laurel. I see silver birch leaves to the left of the main trunk of the tree. New trees that size need a lot of care. Have they been watered since you move in?

  • If you scratch away a small area of bark with your finger nail it will be green underneath if the tree is alive, brown if it is dead.

Yes the bushes are Red Robin. Thank you all for your suggestions. I will scratch the bark to check for anything green, but I think you are all probably correct and they have died. So sad because all the other trees planted have survived just this variety has not fared well.
