We've had lots of dogs - lurchers and greyhounds - and they've all had different attitudes to the garden. Sun bathing on the grass, (fine), stealing foam kneeler mats (very annoying), digging up plants just planted (infuriating), stealing clothes off the washing line and running gleefully round the garden with it (hilarious), shredding sticks (discouraged), digging holes (redirected to 'safe' digging spots).
Mostly they lie around and watch me and I'd hate to be without their company.
Just adapt and accommodate them - they're worth the odd horticultural mishap
Gardening on the edge of Exmoor, in Devon
“It's still magic even if you know how it's done.”
Keep being consistant, so never let them onto the borders or let them start to dig a and they will learn not to do it.
I have a big vegetable garden, the rows are 25m long with a 50cm wide path between each, both dogs know they are allowed on the path but not in the rows, and must go to the end of the row before changing rows. I will say that my collieXlab sticks to this 100% even if she doesn't know you are watching, but the pug will barrel through if she thinks she'll get away with it.
Neither dig or molest plants, well mainly the colliesX does do exactly what the collie in the picture is doing, she loves picking her own strawberries.
I have had my Shi Tzu, now Robbie from Rocko, for 6 years, he has just had his 12th birthday. I also found him advertised on Gumtree. I don't think he had a "garden" before, just a yard. He is not much of a garden dog, he will come and lay near where I am working for a while then moves indoors. His favourite area is the primrose patch and anywhere where the cat has lain. However, he does enjoy digging up cat poo and chasing chickens!. I have had to erect a plastic wire fence around my veg. area because the local cats, as well as my own, think I have put it there for their sole use. My neighbour's chickens are learning not to come into my garden because there is a very noisy, whirling white dervish which chases them, which they do not enjoy. I was assured by Rob's previous owner that he was fine with chickens and ducks. Hah! He does wander around on the borders but doesn't do any damage, if I want him off I just shout OFF! He "usually" moves away. I try to use single-word commands said firmly. I am trying to stop him going berserk in the car whenever he sees a dog or I go past pedestrians, cyclists etc. Something he has only started doing in recent months. Not easy when I am driving. I keep a small tray of rewards on my passenger seat and try to use the word Calm before he spots anything, when he stays quiet I am able to pass him a treat. He is very bright and is much better now so work is still in progress. He has full access to the garden but my garden is definitely not an exhibition garden so plenty of room for him to play at will.
There getting so much better now, they have a little patch in the shaded area where I have creeping jenny, hosta and other shaded plants. They lay and relax on the jenny, we're not bothered, at least they have shade and its soft. As well I left a pathway behind our hydrangea annabelle hedge where they love sleeping under the hydrangeas as it's cool. Now I have seemed to train them to stop on the "no" command (what ever there doing they seem to stop) no more pulling at plants or digging holes. Now I'm training to stop come and sit. By saying come here and pointing at my feet. They have now got it, only done this for two days, so far every time they do it without hesitation.
Sorry to go off topic, and pleeeeeeeze don't take offence with what I'm saying, it's referencing getting dogs off gumtree, it's been mentioned a few times on this thread.
If you google 'dog fighting, gumtree' you'll be thoroughly shocked, criminals do frequent gumtree to obtain dogs AND cats to be used as bait for training purposed re dog-fights. It's shocking and abhorrent!
Think Ireland has banned live animal sales on Gumtree, though their concerns are mainly due to puppy farms and dogs that have been stolen.
I had no idea about the barbaric things going on, it's only when I joined a fb group for German Shepherds where I got alerted. I just want to pass this alert on, as most of us are innocent to what evil criminals get up too.
Hope I've not offended anyone, that's was obviously not my intention.

Oh no I'm not offended, I wasn't looking for a dog at the time, was searching through the everything for sale. She was up for a price which I didn't quibble over, was just her beautiful pictures and the story behind it, she was with a young family, one of the children had some disabilities and they thought it would help, unfortunately the child started picking on her which wasn't good for her causing her alarm and stress. We feel in love and well next thing you know we're taking a road trip with Otis,

Done more or less the same thing, we had to have our 14 year old Monty PTS on the Monday, swearing that we'd never have another dog again to break our hearts, then on Tuesday night I find myself looking at the rescue centre's website and spotted our Rusty. Sometimes we can't help ourselves

My dog loves to sit in planters. She's a collieflower.
