  I pick off the leaves with the larvae and chuck them on the grass away from the plant for the birds to eat.

  They're always very visible on my roses so I would agree with B3, just chop off the bits where they are gathered together eating.

  I squish them. I'm not sure if I just haven't been hunting as much but they seem less bad in my garden this year.  I do have armies of sparrows in three nests around the garden. In the sunlit uplands of my imagination, they are happily taking advantage of the bonanza of protein. They don't seem remotely interested in the blackfly.
  

  
  

   I find saw fly are very active at night, so going around with a torch, you can often spot the wriggling.

  Same here @Fire, there doesn’t seem to be as many this year compared with 2021.
  
  I squish the adults, they stay quite still and are easy to catch. If I see any skeletonised leaves or a scar on a stem where eggs were laid, I look at the underside of the leaves lower down and can usually find the larvae there — I cut off the affected leaves and cut each tiny worm in half (bit fiddly I know, but I like to make sure they are dead) and leave them on the ground.

  I'm such a sap, I can't bring myself to kill them. The only things I can squish are aphids. I'll cut the infested leaves off and put them in my green bin, or sometimes I just leave them! My roses are big enough to spare a few leaves!
