Yellow leaves on privet

Hi the leaves on my mature privet tree started to yellow and fall this spring and it’s now almost bare of leaves ( see picture) I’ve removed all the remaining leaves and cleared the area. Is there any treatment I need to apply now? I’d hate for it to die. I’m a novice gardener. Thank you in advance, Claudio

    Age may be a factor and the hot weather. Buckets of water can't hurt.

    Thank you so much. Yes I have been soaking it regularly and also added a plant Fertilizer. Hopefully it’ll help. It’s such a beautiful tree and the birds love the little berries and seeds. So sad to see it wilting like that
