Ah ok that's a shame... what is the ideal spacing between each plant? I initially had 9 in that plot (with another 9 small plants growing up in the bed next to this one) but some have been eaten or died off naturally.

I plant mine in a staggered double row, 40cm between plants in the row, the two rows 40cm apart and then 1m between them and the next row of whatever it is.

    Thanks for the tips everyone!
An update... I cut one head off the middle of one of the plants which tasted really nice - unfortunately the other one just wasn't big enough so I cut it off anyway in the hope of side shoots coming through.

I don't know if it is related to the recent heatwave we've been having but now the side shoots have turned into yellow buds and everything is flowering - I presume this is normal or have they started "bolting"?

I still have the other plant in the same bed, with more plants on the way so all is not lost but I am guessing that unfortunately the flowering plant is beyond saving now? Pictures below....

They needed harvesting before they developed into long stalks.

But cut them all off now and use them in stir fries. Delicious.

I am afraid that Dove is right.  I think the heat has done for them. You can try cutting off the stalks now and give a real thorough soak, you might get some more shoots but I am not that optimistic.

sadly nothing can be done do to heat.
but in the future you should have option to shade them if high heat is expected.
as for me i  found a way to get a full head broccoli in hot part of august.
the secret is planting broccoli behind a crop that attracts short blond kids
with bowl hair cuts and red eyes  then harvested and cut down in late july.
