Plum tree

I set a plum tree from a garden centre, the main stem died but a shoot came from the bottom and is still growing well with  bushy leaves. Will it eventually fruit or should I discard it please

Is it a grafted tree? If it is, and the new shoot is coming from the rootstock below the graft, then it won't be the plum variety that you bought. The graft looks like a bump or knobbly area near the bottom of the trunk, or possibly near the top of the straight trunk if it's a "lollipop" shaped tree.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Thank you for your comment. It looks like it is a grafted tree from your description. The new growth is very healthy and not tall but bushy , do you think it will still fruit even if a different variety?

The rootstock is probably St Julien
From what I've read it will produce plums late in the season - some reviews say they're very tasty - others say they're too acidic to eat unless fully ripe

  • Thank you Pete, it was a Stanley plum but as you so rightly say the rootstock is st julien
