STAKING A STANDARD ROSE

HELP!
I planted a standard rose in the middle of my front garden last year.....no issues. This year it started off well until the recent winds we had, has made it sway. I tried to stake it but a bamboo stick then changed it to a thick plank of wood, not sure if I have done it well as it keeps bending over.

Please can somebody advise me step by step on the proper way to stake a standard rose.

Thanks in advance.

Is it the stake bending over or is it the rose? If it is only the rose, use two tree ties - one near the head of the standard and one half way down. If it is the stake bending over then you need a sturdier stake driven well down. And staked on the side of the prevailing wind. There is quite a weight in the head of the rose when its in full bloom.

I can check the size of mine in the morning if no-one else replies.

  • hogweed many thanks for your reply. That is very useful. It was indeed the rose bending over but taking the stake with it. I think I am not staking deep enough and staked on the opposite side from where it is bending over to pull it back up.
Certainly the rose head is bigger with more blooms this year.

I will need to try a get a picture put up.
