I use to find plants like that in my French garden, never saw them open, never knew what they were. Daughter said they were weeds but I couldn't find them when I googled.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
thanks folks , looks like the bulbs I thought were Allium 'red mohicans' planted in Autumn are possibly summer drummers, the same happened with some Daffodils from the same store ,I ordered two cultivars and got two different suprise cultivars.
I planted some Allium 'Purple Sensation' last autumn and one of them turned out to be the weird and wonderful A.schubertii. I liked it so much I've ordered some more!
I think there has been some mixing up at the suppliers. I ordered two half dozens of new "Giant" varieties. One has grown a different shade of reddish purple, but nowhere near the size quoted. The others look no different than purple rain I already had. My summer drummers are 6 ft tall and just opening.
My 'Red Mohican' Alliums grew like that to start with, really pointy and curly. Then I suddenly realised they'd straightened out and the casing has only in the past few days peeled away from the flowerhead - the individual flowers are not open yet. So given that I'm a lot further south than you, they might be Red Mohican yet!
