Tetrapanax

Hi there,
I bought a really small tetrapanax Rex plant recently. It has a wooden stem about a foot long. I presume it's last years growth. The only current growth is at the base of the stem. Should I cut the stem back? Seems a shame to lose the height unless necessary

    How very odd.
I would be inclined to leave it.
Just in case the stem is hollow and it could introduce rot to the bottom healthy leaves.

    They grow huge.
I do not think it will be happy in a pot for very long.
