When to first prune very young gooseberry and loganberry plants

in Fruit & veg
I'm new to gardening, so all advice is welcome - planted a gooseberry bush and a loganberry bush a few months ago. They were purchased as very small plants, so will have been grown from seed at the start of the year. They're both doing well in the raised bed they're planted in, but as I'm so inexperienced I don't know how many years old they need to be before they need pruning, or at what time of year to do it. The gooseberry is intent on growing as tall as possible whereas the loganberry is more stout and spreading out sideways. Is there any way to encourage the gooseberry to thicken up rather than becoming very tall and thin, without pruning it while still so young?
