Screening an overlooked garden

We are moving to a house which has one side of its north facing garden overlooked by neighbours. Can anyone recommend any simple ways to provide more screening using either planting or clever fence extension?

Perhaps just don't let it bother you  We're overlooked everywhere we go. It doesn't bother me. I would hate to sacrifice any more sunlight to screening and I doubt the neighbours are watching me...

I would say trees are the only option.
  • If you dont mind waiting 10 years....I'd go fo a few key placed small trees or large shrubs, that provide privacy for a bit of the garden. something that looks lovely with the light coming through its leaves , like acer sango kaku (that gets big),  a big red acer to compliment it or  continus royal purple. In the meantime ,I'd make the  seating area private by putting shrubs near the seat rather than the perimeter , nice scented ones to enjoy.

Work out where you are going to be sitting for most of the time, and then deploy trees, shrubs etc strategically to screen the windows from those locations. That way you get the best bang per buck without feeling totally hemmed in by screening.
