Plants that did ok without watering last week.

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
For those interested in plants that survived the heat last week without watering, I have a list.
I was away in blissfully cool Ireland. My patio plants were squashed into a shady corner so that my neighbour could stand on a bench and water them over the fence. Some were missed so I'll include them but most are in the ground.

Feverfew has gone berserk
Penstemons
Gaura
Salvia greggii
A yellow daisy like thing that isn't coreopsis.
A trough of Lidl bedding fuchsia
Gazania
Some clematis did well but none have died
Agapanthus
Artichoke.
VB
All grasses
Potentilla not the shrubby one. ( they might be ok but I don't grow them.
Lavender
Rosemary
Hebes
Some ferns.
Thses are the ones that didn't wilt.

There are lots of other wilting survivors but they don't count as drought tolerant to my mind.
The roses look ok but they are probably doing the stuff upper lip thing so they'll get a good soak tomorrow.
In London. Keen but lazy.

It's not really surprising that those are all things that do well in my free-draining sandy soil (not sure about the unnamed yellow daisy - maybe anthemis?)
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Would you not expect more est'd plants in the ground to do ok? Genuine question from the curious. I'm about to go away for more than a week and have a waterer just doing pots and raised beds. I'm keeping fingers crossed for the rest.

    That sounds right @JennyJ

No new plants . One crispy casualty was a newly planted achillea that I bought without realising I already had it. The established one was fine.

    It's been pretty baking in the SW, but I haven't watered these at all;
    Lavender
    Penstemon
    Foxgloves
    Stachys
    Crocosmia
    Clematis
    Welsh poppies
    Blackcurrant
    Jasmine
    Hypericum
    Fuchsia
    Pinks
    Phlox
    Osteospermum
    Salvia
    Raspberry
    Oregano
    Dicentra
    Nemesia
    Astrantia

I've watered some in the new bed because they're young or transplanted, and get direct sun most of the day.

Nothing est has wilted for me except a clematis which is always unhappy anyway.

I have given everything new a deep soaking over the last few days  plus an est'd espalier apple that seems to want the attention - I want to try and keep the apples on this year and lots of water might help. My roses that always repsond to a deep soak, no matter how old they are.

Most perennials seemed to be OK. It's easier to list what did wilt: rudbeckias, hydrangeas, a couple of rose bushes and clematis, perennial sunflowers, tobacco plants, asters, buddleias (surprisingly), acers and heleniums.

I watered anything that wilted. It took ages.

We've had about 5cm of rain in the last 2 months, I don't water anything (other than new transplants and strawberries) if it can't survive on it's own it can just die and leave room for something that can.
Pots of course are something different, I've been known to take them to a friends for watering!
