My Sunpatiens seem small for 22 June, or are they about right?

Hi. Does anyone know how big Sunpatiens usually get my mid June. Its my first year with them and I got them as plugs months ago. They have obviously grown from the plug size but to me they still seem very small for mid June.

Or am I just being my usual inpatient self?

How big are they at the moment?  They seem a little lost, is that the final planting position and were they planted in it directly as plugs ?

  • They do seem lost dont they. I potted them on when they arrived and kept indoors then moved to my mini greenhouse (plastic) before planting in the position they are in now. They have doubled, maybe tripled in size from the plug but they seem to have stopped growing now. I would have thought they should be quadruple this size by now.

I think, next time, you would do better to grow them on in pots, potting up 3 or 4 times before putting them into the big container. They should be OK, but they have been overwhelmed by the move to the huge container.
What sort of compost did you use? I can't quite make out what you have on the surface but I'm not confident that it is helping.

Maybe they are hungry. Did the compost have added nutrients and have you fed them? Try giving them a liquid feed when you water them.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • I agree. I think they needed potting on a few more times not just twice. Ill try again next year. I have a better set up for plugs now. Feeding wise I started feeding them every fortnight with general purpose liquid feed but the compast is multi purpose with added seaweed and iron which I do for all my plants. These may have been too young for the hit. The top of the compost isn't anything its just changed colour and started roasting in the sun I think. This fence get 0% shade all day and faces south. They are on the irrigation system which has automatic timing and a liquid feed dispenser too and the pots have a reservoir so they were probably put in the large containers to soon. Ill try better next year lol. I have repotted them now so I have some nice flowers to look at for the rest of this year.
