Summer watering of established clematis in the ground? ðŸ˜

How long would you judge a clematis to be "established"? How long would it take for you to stop watering them through the summer? I put in a cirrhosa about four years ago, in earth with regular manure and other organic matter. It isn't happy. The roots are fairly shaded and the head in the sun (west facing). Do you still water clems in the ground through the summer after years?  Some seem fine without "cossetting", as I would call it. The cirrhosa is getting up my nose.

I never water mine except if it's been blazing hot for a couple of weeks, nor do I feed or compost.
