Grass and dogs

Hello, we have about 35m squared triangle shaped area which consists of half of our garden. The area currently is covered in gravel which the previous tenants put down however it’s an unattractive look, it’s thinning and the dog is digging in all over where it’s thinning. We was thinking whether we would be able to put grass down in this area as it’ll look better and be nicer for the dogs paw pads. However I’m not sure if it’s a too small of an area to put grass down as dogs wee can burn the grass so I’m not sure if it will get destroyed. What are peoples opinions of whether it’s a too small of an area for grass with a dog? I have considered artificial grass as an alternative but I would rather consider actual grass firstly as it’s cheaper and more environmentally friendly. Thank you.

You could put turf down if you wanted to ,do you have the means to keep it trimmed and tidy. Male dogs urine doesn’t harm grass only female non spayed dogs urine is a problem but if you put a bowl of water over it ,it’ll dilute it down. Grass would be better for the dog but a long walk would be better.

Unfortunately, and speaking first hand, I can categorically say that is not the case.

My female spayed dog pees on the grass which does turn it brown for a few weeks, then it grows back strongly and very dark green.

Definitely grass it, your dog will have somewhere cool and comfy to lie on, and it really doesn't matter if there's a couple of temporary pee patches. As bcpathone says, just chuck water where he/she pees when you can.

Depending on how trainable you’re dig is, and how determined you are, you could make an area of bark chippings in a discreet (and discrete) area of the garden and train your dog to go there to pee. You can then shovel it up and discard or composting a couple of times a year as necessary.
That way your lawn isn’t damaged and is more pleasant to sit, play or walk barefoot on. 😊

  • Ok thanks all, I will water the grass every evening hopefully then to dilute any pee in the grass.
