Are your annuals late this year?

I sowed various scented Dianthus, antirrhinum, nicotiana, ageratum etc and they are all behind friend's shop bought ones.
They were grown in a greenhouse on heated pads and given the best TLC.
Tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers also slow.
I have just got to be patient, I suppose.

I was thinking about this the other day Penny_Forthem because mine are the same and I came to the conclusion that shop bought ones are grown earlier so in flower earlier. I don't plant mine out until the beginning of June so I sow later.

Some are, some aren't, but I don't grow many annuals. The Ipomoeas are very slow, but May wasn't ideal for them to grow on outside, so they were in the growhouse for much longer, and it wasn't terribly warm in there either, especially at night. I doubt if my house would have been much warmer for them. I don't use heat for any plant, and the heating was rarely on by then. Even the later sown ones weren't much better though.
Sweet peas were ok, but they're hardy annuals, unlike the morning glory.
Tomatoes were slow, but I did nothing different from the normal with those, so I can only assume it was the rubbish compost. They're better now.
Commercially grown ones will always be further on due to growing conditions.
