Is this a weed or is it about to bloom into lovely flowers?

It might be centaurea. You won't have long to wait to find out🙂
In London. Keen but lazy.

Looks like centaurea/cornflower to me too. It comes in both annual and perennial forms

So it's both. A benign "weed" about to bloom into lovely flowers - not too invasive and easy to pull up. The kind that I usually leave alone.

Great for bees. The car park at the Knepp estate is surrounded by a hedge of knapweed - it looks fabulous.
