Yew Balls turned brown

We have 5 yew balls that have been in for 2 years now and had seemed very happy.  However, they’ve quite quickly turned brown and gone crispy.  We have been watering as normal (from the last 2 years).

Does anyone have any ideas what’s happened or what I can do to help them?

Those look dead, not sure why, but lack of water might be the cause.

From your photo, it would appear to be crowded by other planting. This could result in a lack of water as well as nutrients.
Your picture shows a plant which, if not already dead, is certainly on it's way. If you decide to start again with a new plant, I'd suggest you allow it more space and light in order to enable it to thrive.  Being able to see all round the plant would also make it easier for you to tend to it :)
