Is it getting the same amount as those either side?
If it is, then it may not be a water issue at all.

I doubt a sapling is going to suffer from too much water. Give more.

If it isn't a lack of water, what could it be? Windy damage maybe? All its neighbours are thriving

Young trees need a good soak with a large bucket’s worth of water, every week in their first 1-2 years, more if very hot.
We've had a really hot week down here and it could be that yours needs more too.
Then again, if it’s companions are fine, worth checking you haven’t got vine weevil doing any root damage in there.
How much do you give it?

Im in Northern Ireland & its only been 16 degrees max over here this past week. Have been watering once a week but will try 2 times a week to see if it makes a difference. Thanks all for your input :)

Looks a bit like it's newly unfurling leaves. If so, give it a week and it might look better. I assume these might be bare root planted this winter? If so then they leaf out much later than established beech. They're also seed grown so there will be a lot of variability between them. Good luck.

The question is still, why is the middle tree in a totally different state to the ones either side?
Does not suggest a watering issue.

  • Just a thought ... have the roots been firmed in well enough? A cat could have brushed past it and loosened it from the soil a little, perhaps?
