Acer getting too big.

Hi,  When I planted my Acer  in the  lawn I had no idea it grow so well and now is getting too big for the area.  It is blocking out light from the shrubs growing behind it.   Is it possible to move and re plant it.  Many Thanks…..Pennymax

It's not always easy to move them, certainly not at this time of year. When dormant is better, and it will depend on the size as to how well it will take, although you can cut them back as well.

    Have you got a photo?

Yes it's a widely perpetuated myth that you can't prune Acers. You can, the Japanese do this  to keep plants within an alloted space. You just have to do it at the right time. You can shorten long thin growths back to 2 buds any time now.  Large structural cuts must wait till winter when it's dormant as should any attempt to move or replant it.

I have pruned Acers quite hard. They regenerate well.
If you choose to move it you can prepare the plant one year and move it the next.
