Problem with Plum Tree

This plum tree flowered in late February, and despite the frosty period we had, didn't seem to have any problem.  In fact, if anything, it seemed to do well.  However, in April ( I think, or late March) the flowers started dying, and no fruit was produced (though I didn't expect any fruit, or flowering. for that matter).  I just thought that later in the year, it may flower for a second time, and would be a perfectly good plum tree.  However, for a few weeks now, 2 of the 3 main stems have some problem with the leaf, whilst the 3rd looks perfectly healthy (as shown).  Can anybody tell me, what is going on here?  For instance, why did it flower so early?  Why did it seemingly, resist any frost damage ?  What is the problem with the leaf?

Can we see a photo of the whole tree please?

Do you know what variety it is?

    When was it planted?

Is it in the ground or in a pot?

I'm not sure when it was planted.  I got it from Thompson & Morgan, in the winter, and it came roughly as it is now, without leaves on, and without the pot..  It's prunus domestica duo.

It looks to me as if one of the grafted varieties is very unhappy.

I would send a photo of that to Thompson & Morgan stating that you are not happy with it. Hopefully they will refund or replace.

  • Thanks for the advice.  Like I said, they did flower really well, if (what I thought, anyway) was a little too early.  It is worth a try

To me the pot looks too small for a tree that size. It might grow a bit more healthy if the roots had more space to grow. I only have plums in the ground so not sure if they are able to do well in pots. The more recently planted ones I have flowered but did not set fruit but I just put it down to there being a late frost and that they may not be mature enough to fruit well yet. I read somewhere that plum fruiting can be unreliable because the flowering happens before frosts are finished in many areas.

    Happy gardening!
  • You're probably right.  On reflection. my mate, who also bought one of these, at exactly the same time, has planted his in the ground, and that seems to be doing OK.  I've had a bad injury, and it's taking time for me to fully heal, hence the delay in planting it in the ground.  How high do these things can grow, in height?
  • Not sure about the specific one you have planted but the latest ones I got from a German budget supermarket had a label saying they would grow to 3 - 4metres in height if I remember correctly. Hope the injury heals up soon.
    All the best!
