Pansies

What's the best climate / temperature for starting pansies off from the seed stage? I always seem to mess it up and it's meant to be easy. I know they can take a few weeks to germinate.

It depends where you are in the UK @rlew , but in the South West l sow them in a seed tray and put them in a coldframe at this time of year as l don't give them any extra heat. If you don't have a coldframe you could start them off on a windowsill.
As you say, they can take time to germinate and it can be very erratic, patience is key  :)

I sow pansies every year,  they prefer a cooler time to germinate,  so March or September is best.
I just keep them in the GH.

Don't they need to be excluded from light? I'm in North of England.

Exclusion from light is achieved by covering the seed with a thin layer of compost. I just sow in pot in glasshouse in June. My biggest problem with all seeds is slugs.

Seems we all do different methods,  this is what I’ve always done.
