What to do with this Sambucus?

Hi, I planted this Sambucus Black Lace last year. This year, two stalks have shot up, but I've only had one flower head down low near the ground. What do I do? Prune these two long stalks now? if so, how much? Or leave it to do its own thing? Thanks for any advice!

They take a few seasons to get going, so more flowers will come each year.
You can prune it anytime from nov-march and you can prune it back as much as you want.

If you want it a bit bushier now, you could cut off the top half and the lower bit will send out side shoots.

It seems very close to that fence and they do build up quite a crown of stems right at the bottom over a few year, so your neighbour may get some too!

These flower best on last year's growth so if you want to change the shape, now would be a good time to do so as it will give plenty of time for regrowth and flowers next year.
If you want better leaves then you can trim in the spring as this premotes larger leaves often at the expense of flowering.
  • Thanks, both. I think I'll trim it a bit now so it bushes out a bit.
