Chop and drop

I've just been ready about this system of chopping up weeds and returning them to fallow soil to enrich it with minerals etc which the weeds contain.  Presumably this can't be done at this time of year when the soil is dry and the chopped up weeds would just dry up and not be of much use?

    It is a good system, but might cause extra problems if you already have a slug problem.

    It all eventually adds organic matter, you can use grass clippings similarly. Just be careful if you have any pernicious perennial weeds that can grow back twice as bad from the choppings!

    In spring,  I clip and dry the tips for tisanes and use the young tips in soups or an omelette.  Then, I dig the soil over and mulch the nettles.  If there are loads, I make a purin. 
    A good hoeing is worth two waterings.
