Moved perennials
in Plants
Afternoon,
Due to inexperience and naivety, some of my perennials had grown way too large and were smothering other plants. So, I’ve cut back and moved the following to more suitable areas; Cirsium rivulare atropurpureum, nepeta summer magic and a common aquilegia. I’ve tried to get as much of the root ball as possible and given them a good drink.
Hopefully they’ll pick up in a few weeks or do they resent disturbance?
With regards to the Cirsium, I was struggling to keep this moist enough (I’ve learnt our soil is quite light and well drained!) as it was covered in powdery mildew and looking quite sorry for itself. I read on Hardy’s website that it’s suitable for a bog garden so I’ve dug up some marsh marigold I had in a bit around the pond which is lined with pond liner with some holes pierced in it. As the marsh marigolds did well here, is it likely the Cirsium will do ok or will it be too moist? I was resigned to losing the Cirsium so I guess I’ve got nothing to lose.

Aquilegias are fine to move if you can get enough root out, but better if cut back, and then you'll get more green growth - and flowers.
I don't grow nepeta, but it would probably benefit form a trim back too, just to lessen the stress.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
If your ground stays pretty wet, hopefully where I’ve put the Cirsium will be ok.
