Can anyone identify if this is a weed in our garden.

    yeah, the scratch one is a weed

    I think that's the common sow thistle, does it have a yellow flower Mark-E?

    Yes I agree with @Uff ... Sow thistle.  

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    Hi Uff,  no flowers yet. I can leave it in now aslong as its not too invasive too see what comes of it.

    It will probably have a yellow flower and then seed everywhere .I always get rid on the compost heap
