Early Greengage Pruning

One of the branches on my greengage is infested with woolly and green aphids which are causing significant damage to it. I really don't want them spreading to the rest of the tree and as it's a branch I was intending to get rid of anyway, would it be OK to cut it off now? I know it's a bit early but I really don't want them expanding their territory.
