Old turf ... compost or not?

I'm digging up old turf to lay some fresh turf. Can I put sods of turf in the compost bin? Or a separate pile somewhere? It seems silly to drive it to the tip!

Some would be amazed at the life in just a thimble full of soil. you don't need a lot to start with, but amazing what seaweed and molasses can do and just add a little oxygen.

I never knew retirement would be so busy.
