Potted Christmas tree

Hi everyone

I bought a small potted Christmas tree from Asda last year and thought I'd repot it and use again for years to come however recently it has started turning brown but strangely it has started growing some kind of buds? Is this a dead tree? Am I wasting my time on it? Are they meant to get sun or be kept in shade? I'm a total noob sorry for all the questions

They need to be in soil - a soil based medium in a pot, and they need lots of water. I wouldn't keep it in a very sunny site as that will only dry it out more quickly too.  :)
However, the brown areas won't regrow. Firs grow from the ends of branches, which is what you're seeing- it's just the new growth, and the inner parts die back. Anything potted needs the growing medium refreshed, so if it's staying potted, you'll need to re pot, or at least refresh the soil each year. A mulch of bark or similar helps to retain some moisture too, so you can add a layer of that after a good soaking.

Take all the willowherb out of the pot too - it's a weed, and is competition. I'd take all of it out of the paving too- it seeds everywhere    ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Magic thanks for the fast reply, so I've not killed it off just yet  :) I'll move it to the shaded area and yes it is very thirsty, I'm putting around 4 pints a day in the pot.

    Thanks again

If you can repot it into a more substantial soil based medium, it won't dry out so readily. It'll need a bigger one soon though, to keep it happy   :)
