Lupin aphids

My lupins have been ravaged by aphids this year. I guess we have the mild winter to thank for this. Anyone know if the plants will survive and come back next year? This one looks particularly sad!

I would clear it all away as soon as you can down to ground level. Keep watered and you should soon see it regrow.

Oh dear, that looks like one I had last year!  I ended up ripping the whole thing out as even once I cut it down, they were all still sitting on the little bit that I'd left and it was just too much to try and keep squidging them all.

@Janie B oh, that is so sad. Like @GardenerSuze says, if you cut off the stems, it might survive. I too have a lupin that has been ravaged by the aphids; the flowers are all bent like inverted umbrella handles. At the same time, another one just a few yards away is unaffected.

Yes, @Eustace, I have one not too far away that they haven't got to yet... matter of time, I reckon! Isn't it funny how they stick to the lupins... all the other plants in the bed are unaffected...

  • Try soapy water spray (washing up liquid), it seems to have worked on mine. It is odd that some plants succumb while others close by are unaffected....

I have a single blue lupin in a pot no others in the garden and none in other gardens nearby but the bloody aphids have found it!
Love these plants but gave up in the garden after hours of squashing failed to help but did think a single specimen might be immune.
    No more lupins for me

Well my lupin was free this year so let’s see how it fairs. I’ve had lupin aphid before too.
