My aliums are up - my first Continus Purple Smoke is flowering ...

    that looks really good, so when do you cut back that tall stem?  Do you wait for it to nearly fall over when the head has gone?

    @ren.b There are so many different hardy geraniums for different soils,aspects and heights. All are easy to grow. Whites pinks and purples all would work with your colour scheme.  
    If you do opt for this idea you need not worry about the leaves.
    Most of the tall Alliums will have decaying leaves by the time they flower.

    They don't fall over ren.b,. They can be left in the garden or cut back at base, bunched up, and tied upside down somewhere dry to finish drying for use in the house for decorations either as they are or spray paint them.

    As @Uff says - alliums are pretty sturdy so the stem, and the head, both stay in place after the flowering period is over.  :)
    Many people like to leave them in situ. I don't find them very attractive so I rarely leave them for very long. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    I have one seed head of Allium shubertii I think it must be four years old still looks lovely.
