Sweet Pea cuttings?

LeadFarmerLeadFarmer Posts: 1,500
Is it possible to take cuttings from a perennial sweet pea, or better to dig up some of the rooted plant?

My mother has this gorgeous perennial sweet pea in her garden she's had for years. I have just learnt that it came from my grandmothers garden a few decades ago. My mum dug some up and planted it in her garden. Problem is, the roots are mostly growing under her patio so not easy to get to.

Because of its history I'd like to have some of this plant in my garden, so what's the best way of doing this? Cuttings or digging up a clump, and when?

You can collect seed and grow them that way.

@LeadFarmer You say the root is mostly under the patio. I did try to dig one up many years ago, they are very deep rooted. Not sure how much success you will have, they also have a tendancy to snap leaving root behind. I thought I had dug it all out but some did appear the next year.

I only want to take a bit of it, but I might first try collecting seed form it this year. If trying to dig a bit of it up, when would be the best time to do so?

It grows so easily from seed that it hardly seems worth trying to get under the patio. I imagine Spring would be the best time if you do but your seedlings should be well away by then.
