Clematis Advise Needed

VoyagerxpVoyagerxp Posts: 651
I'm quite new at keeping clematis, i planted this clematis  princess kate pbr zoprika in i think 2020 and last year it was looking good and filling my trellis out nicely but this year its only showing flowers and leaves at the top of the trellis and just a dry looking stem below. Any reason why this has happened or tips on how to avoid this next season.

What variety of clem is it? Bare-ness will be related to the pruning group.

    Pruning and feeding.

Your clematis is a group 3 which means you should cut it back low in spring and then give it a good feed of specialist clematis feed - tho rose or tomato feed will do - and a good mulch to retain moisture and nutrients whilst it puts on all the lovely new spring growth.

Too late to prune yours this year but you could certainly water and feed it to improve flowering this year.

treated well, your clematis should produce more and more shoots form the ground each year so you also need to think about extending that trellis so you can train new stems horizontally or diagonally to encourage more flowers to form.   If you can't extend the trellis, consider tensioned wires across your fence.

Did you prune it this Spring?

Doesn't look like it's been pruned, which is why it looks the way it does.
As @Obelixx says, the trellis won't be enough for it as it grows. Another trellis beside it, or wires, will give a better support.
The way it's planted - ie soil and ongoing care, will also affect the potential growth   :)

I cut it down to the ground when the new shoot came out of the ground. I do intend to extend the trellis when it picked up in size.

All you can do this year then is give ita  good, long drink to moisten the soil and its roots and then top with a mulch of well-rotted manure or a mix of well-rotted compost and some slow release fertiliser for clematis, roses or tomatoes.  That will encourage the roots to grow well and produce more shoots next year.

When you do prune it next spring, take that one stem back to the ground and then train new shoots in as horizontally or diagonally as possible as this will encourage the original shoots to make more stems themselves.   Give it another good feed as above.   You'll need to have the extra trellis in place before all the new shoots start to grow!

How is it planted? It looks as if it's in a sunken bed of some kind?
It should have produced more stems this year if it was pruned/planted correctly.
Group 3s also benefit from being planted more deeply than in the container they come in. If that wasn't the case, you can add some more compost etc around the base.  :)
