I have a Spiraea Magic Carpet which I planted last year, unfortunately in the wrong place and want to reposition. When would be the best time to do this? I realise now is not good but wonder when would be, I live in Cornwall if that makes a difference.
The best time to move shrubs is in late autumn when the leaves have fallen or, if evergreen, it is going dormant as this will reduce stress on the plant and give the roots time to re-establish themselves without having to support sap flow and foliar growth above ground.
It can also be done right up to late winter in a frost free period but autumn is best because the soil is still warm and should be moist from autumn rains. Water the plant well to moisten the roots and soften the soil as this reduces root damage. You need 15 to 20 litres litres poured slowly and left to soak for an hour - then dig it up with as much root ball as possible and plant it at the same depth in a well-prepared hole. Firm it in gently then water again and give it a mulch.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Remember that the "best time" doesn't necessarily mean that you must move it during the "best time" or it will die. If you need to move it, then move it on the basis that it won't die if you don't do it at the "best time".
