Abutilon 'Cloth of Gold'

Abutilon 'Cloth of Gold':  I live in London & this beautiful plant is currently in a garden bed - & flowering away.  I'd like to transplant it to a large container, with plenty of John Innes No. 3.  It's now 6 June - is it too late to do this?  Should I wait until next spring?  I'd really prefer to do it now - but any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.  Marian.

I think it depends on whether you are around through out the summer and whether you mind potentially sacrificing some months of flowers. In the spring I swapped my three ft Nabob from a pot to the ground. Transfers of established plants usually bring on some shock. The Nabob went into freeze for three or four months, while it recovered and began to put down shoots. Only now is it beginning to flower. It will need a lot of care over the summer.

I always read that shrubs struggle more going from ground to a pot than from pot to the ground, but others on the forum don't believe this to be true.

My Nabob is one of my favourite plants in the garden; I hope to grow it into a tree. Abutilons are really terrific plants.

Fire:  Thanks so much for that advice.  Much appreciated.  I will be around over the summer but, from what you've said, I'll leave any transplanting for the time being.  Maybe next spring, maybe not.  Say what you like about Nabob! (which I agree is beautiful) but you can't beat the 'Cloth of Gold'!  Stunning.  Last quick question:  Sadly I didn't prune it in spring (April) & it's now looking a bit leggy.  Now that it's flowering, is it too late to give it a bit of a prune?   Regards, Marian.

I think any pruning now is likely to reduce flowering. I would take out any dead, diseased or dying growth and wait to do a more major prune in later winter. They like as much full sun as they can get. It will help strong growth. I feed with fish, blood and bone.

    There is some advice here

If I had a yellow theme going, I would put in Cloth oF Gold.
