Climbing rose

NickG61NickG61 Posts: 21

I’ve just dug up a Cypressa which was against a south west facing wall at the front of the house - so plenty of sun. I want to replace it with an old fashioned climbing rose using the existing structure. Ideally, a large, mature plant but I have no idea what variety would be best suited.  We live in South Wales & are 810 feet above sea level.  Any suggestions would be most welcome!

The soil will need improving with rotted manure and compost before planting. It looks close to the wall so it may get dry, in which case the rose will need regular watering.

Do you have any preferences as to colour or scent? There are loads of roses so it would be easier to narrow it down a bit. The Eden Rose (Pierre de Ronsard in French) would look lovely but it isn't scented, for example.

Have you had a look at the David Austin site? Or Peter Beales? Are you near a garden centre so you can choose one and ask for advice? Easier to buy a mature one from a GC than online but not always available. It will grow anyway.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
