Weird creature on my pellargonium :-0

Dear Folks,

Apologies for poor quality photos - I noticed today a large creature sipping nectar from my pellargonium, it's a large almost colliber sized "thing" and I have no clue what it was.
Any ideas?
It's not been sitting on the flowers, rather, sipping nectar using a beak whilst flying :-0
Very peculiar!

Please kindly advise if you have an idea.
Thank you.

I think it's a hummingbird hawkmoth (or a bee hawkmoth but difficult to tell from your photos) - and you're very lucky!

I agree, HHM, so nice to see.

Given that they migrate here, isn't it early to be seeing them in the UK?  I was hearing the other day that there are instances of a few overwintering in southern UK in mild winters ... it might be worthwhile reporting this one to your local Wildlife Trust.

I was lucky enough to see a Hummingbird Hawkmoth about a fortnight ago at a Somerset garden centre. He was having a wonderful time amongst the plants, spoilt for choice.

Always get so excited if l see one, they are fascinating. Haven't seen many moths of any description for the last week or so, it's been so chilly.
