Help! Hedge species? Disease?

  • Hi @dangermousie, to be honest, I never have noticed any pests on the hedge... but then I'm not very observant when it comes to things like that.
For a month or so after I applied the nematodes it had little white flecks all over but that's mostly gone now. I guess that was some material that the nematodes were packaged with rather than actual nematodes as they'd be too small to see?
There's quite a bit of new growth now and that mostly looks healthy although some of it has been munched by something. I still can't see any pests, though, just the odd black ant.
In the absence of any better ideas, I'll apply the nematodes again in April and hope that sorts the problem.
  • Hmmm, did you apply it to the foliage or into the soil?
  • Both - my hedge was much smaller than the coverage listed in the instructions so I covered both the foliage and the soil.
  • Have just listened to the experts on Gardeners’ Question Time Radio 4 where a question was asked about Viburnam tinus and its unpleasant smell. It seems that when it rains it emits a smell that some people think is like dog poo but not necessarily everyone. Different plants can smell different or not at all to different people! I suggest replacing it with something else if the smell offends.
