Strange growths on apple tree leaves

I have started to notice what I took to be cankers on the leaves of one of my pot-grown apple trees. They were yellow in colour, about 4-6mm in oval shape & appeared to be shiny.
After removing one for closer inspection, I noticed that they weren't a 'canker' but the hard shell of a very small caterpillar. The chewed leaves around the shell pointed to summat live living there.
Under magnification, the outer hard shell was 'furry' & once cut open, revealed a very small caterpillar, 3-4mm in length, white in colour with dark head. Out of all my fruit trees, this is the only one infected, with about a dozen affected leaves.
I have scoured all my books on apples & the internet, but without identifying this pest.
