Mice or squirrels

Well my peas and beans start sprouting well but something keeps eating the new shoots and there’s a little hole next to it so I think it’s got to be mice - very tiresome. It’s more the peas and mange-tout rather than French beans but they’ve probably had both. Even putting a mesh over them hasn’t deterred them so I think it’s mice rather than squirrels. Squirrels are at the moment eating green strawberries brazenly sitting on the fence.

Do you just accept it and grow it to a good size in pots before planting out then hoping that they’re less interested in larger plants? It’s hard to tell if there are enough peas to climb the wigwam at this stage or how many bean plants I’ll have.

Any 'pea' seeds are vulnerable to mice, so it's often better to germinate and grow on inside for a while before planting out. If I grow mange tout, I do them much later, - about mid May, and in a large pot, and that's usually easier, because they wouldn't grow much anyway if I did them earlier. If I did them earlier, they'd be in the house, and grown on for a while before putting out.

Mesh won't do anything to prevent them. They can squeeze through the tiniest of holes. If the holes were small enough to stop them, it would be too dense to allow light through  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

It’s rubbish isn’t it. I have some in pots as back up which I won’t plant out until they’re more mature - hope it’s less appealing then. Hope it’s not too late to sow some more now too.
Even more annoying is that I thought there was a spare bit of ground where I could put a strawberry plant in and I ended up cutting into some peas or beans that were just beginning to sprout under there. I’m just going to leave everything for a week or two now to see what pops up.
